Andy Cohen reacts to CNN’s New Year’s Eve announcement about alcohol

Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper are known for their alcohol-induced rants every New Year’s Eve on CNN New Year’s Eve Livebut fans of the show learned this week that CNN might not be so amused by how the two TV personalities choose to ring in the new year.

According Variety, In a town hall discussion Tuesday between CNN executives and Chris Licht, the company’s president and CEO, Licht expressed concern that drinking alcohol on camera could cause CNN to lose “respect” for his viewers. While Cohen and Cooper are said to be allowed to drink alcohol during the show, Variety reports that, along with other correspondents and anchors who may have consumed alcohol in previous years both on and off camera in Times Square, they will be asked not to drink.

But Cohen says fear not: His plans for welcoming 2023 include plenty of booze.

“I think New Year’s Eve is a night to go hard,” she tells Yahoo Life, “and I’m going to go hard on New Year’s Eve.”

And he will do it for the fans watching from the couch.

“I think part of the ‘playing at home’ factor of New Year’s Eve is that people enjoy watching me try to plaster Anderson, and I will,” Cohen says. “The announcement yesterday was that CNN doesn’t want its correspondents drinking on New Year’s Eve. I think people don’t understand. I’ll be drinking on New Year’s Eve — just be sure of that.”

Cohen spoke with Yahoo Life as part of his work promoting Fresca’s new Fresca Mixed, a new twist on the classic soda that contains either tequila or vodka. A longtime fan of drinking Fresca paired with tequila, Cohen says his partnership with the brand is a perfect fit.

“This is the most perfect pair of people to represent a product,” says the 54-year-old. “Not only does it taste really great, but for those of us who love to celebrate but watch what we’re drinking — if you look at a Fresca Mixed Paloma versus the sugar you’d get in a margarita, they’re two completely different planets.”

But what will Cohen’s New Year’s drink be? The Watch What Happens Live The host, whom Fresca has dubbed “VP of Frisky,” says his favorite cocktail is the Fresca mixed with tequila. Seriously.

“I’ve been drinking fresh and tequila together for years,” he says. “That’s why I’m here, it’s no accident.”
